key stage 3

Years 7, 8 and 9

Students in key stage 3 cover a variety of topics from number, algebra, shape and data.  During the three years these topics will be taught more than once to allow students to reinforce, develop and embed their knowledge and understanding.

Mathematics lessons will comprise of:

  • “Recap 5” upon entry – a chance to revisit previous work or concepts
  • Introduction to new ideas, approaches and methods
  • Opportunities to practise and apply
  • Regular checks on success
  • Intervention as necessary

Homework is set fortnightly from a booklet and is used for additional practice. These booklets can be found on the “A star learning” website where tutorials are available to help in case of difficulties.

Pupils are assessed at the end of each half term up to the end of year exam (around Easter) after which they are reset for the following year.

Before each test, students are provided with a list of topics to revise from.

Revision materials can be found on the “A star learning” website and students are expected to use this regularly.

key stage 4

Years 10 and 11 (GCSE)

Students in years 10 and 11 follow the AQA GCSE syllabus, which covers a wide range of mathematical knowledge and skills, from number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry, statistics and probability.

There are two tiers of entry at GCSE; both tiers are assessed through three exams (one non-calculator and two calculator based) taken at the end of year 11. Final decisions are made about individual tiers of entry after the mock exams in year 11.

During the two years these topics will be covered more than once to allow students to reinforce, develop and embed their knowledge and understanding. Students will also be given opportunities to engage with exam materials.

Mathematics lessons will comprise of:

  • “Recap 5” upon entry – a chance to revisit previous work or concepts
  • Introduction to new ideas, approaches and methods
  • Opportunities to practise and apply
  • Regular checks on success
  • Intervention as necessary

In year 10, homework is set fortnightly from a booklet and is used for additional practice. These booklets can be found on the “A star learning” website where tutorials are available to help in case of difficulties.

In year 11 booklets are replaced by past examination papers.

In year 10, pupils are assessed at the end of each half term up to the end of year exam (around Easter).

In year 11, pupils are assessed through the mock examinations which take place shortly before Christmas.

Before each test students are provided with a list of topics to revise from.

Revision materials can be found on the “A star learning” website and students are expected to use this regularly.
